In 2022, Hawkers head coach, Adam Thane, and MSU Fulbright Fellow from Tanzania, Godlove Wilson, hatched an idea over a beer… create a Pan African Speech and Debate League similar to what Godlove witnessed in awe while watching the Hawkers. Conversation became reality shortly after when Adam raised a remarkable $120k to fund the inaugural trip and Godlove obtained approval from the Tanzanian Ministry of Education. Come summer of 2023, 11 Hawkers, 1 Hawker alum and 4 Hawker coaches delivered the inaugural speech and debate camp in Mwanza, Tanzania training 60 Tanzanian students and educators from 30 schools in Mwanza.

Our Purpose & Objectives:
To impart a set of skills that will be impactful, pragmatic, and transferable so that African schools can independently implement debate programs which allow their students to practice and compete in debate in order to foster critical thinking, research skills, productive civil discourse, and confident public speaking leading to the betterment of not just those students and teachers who are able to participate, but also to all students at the schools from which participants come.
